Department of Microbiology

Department of Microbiology has the state of the art facilities with around the clock service laboratory which caters to the out-patients and in-patients of Saveetha Medical College Hospital. The laboratory service provided by qualified technical staff is supervised by well experienced clinical microbiologists. The department undertakes teaching, diagnostic as well as research activities.

Serological tests such as Widal, Rapid Plasms Reagin (RPR), Anti-streptolysin O (ASO) titre, C-reactive protein (CRP) and Rheumatoid factor (RA) are routinely done in this laboratory. Tests for HIV, Hepatitis B surface antigen, HCV, Leptospira, Malarial antigen and Dengue are also available by ELISA and rapid methods. Other investigations include bacteriology cultures & sensitivity, mycobacteriology, parasitology and mycology. In house culture media preparation and quality control are also done in the lab.

Facilities available in the department

Infrastructure is available for participating in ICTC (Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre for HIV) and RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme).

 

Teaching facilities available for handling 150 MBBS students comprise of well equipped student’s laboratory, demonstration halls, museum, library and research laboratories. The teaching faculties are well experienced, knowledgeable and dedicated. The department also caters for MSc (Medical Microbiology), BSc MLT and BPT students.

 

Research activities

 

The following research proposals are to be approved by research and ethical committees of our institution.

  1. Clinico-mycological study of superficial fungal infections
  2. Aetiology of skin and soft tissue infection (SSI) at SMCH with special reference to MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
  3. Characterization of bacterial isolates in urinary tract infection and phenotypic detection of ESBL (Extended spectrum beta lactamase producers)
