Department of Biochemistry is well equipped with the state of art facilities for students as well as faculty. The Department of Biochemistry is committed to basic research and training undergraduate, post graduate, and professional students for careers in biochemistry, molecular biology, and related life sciences. This department imparts teaching and practical laboratory facilities for MBBS, B.Sc (MLT), M.Sc (Medical) Biochemistry and PhD students. The department also provides academic support for conducting courses for Allied Health Sciences, nursing and physiotherapy. A well designed student practical laboratory with Charts and concept maps is available for the students to enrich their knowledge. The clinical biochemistry laboratory attached to the department caters to the diagnostic needs of Saveetha General Hospital. It is actively taking part in patient care by carrying out various diagnostic investigations in clinical biochemistry. In addition to the routine investigations, special investigations like estimation of isoenzymes, thyroid profile and electrophoresis of serum proteins which aid the clinicians in diagnostic and prognostic workup.
Facilities available in the departmentThe research lab is equipped with most of the modern facilities required for teaching and research. It includes UV-VIS spectrophotometer, centrifuges (High speed and Ultra), electrophoresis unit (Horizontal and vertical), PAGE, ELISA reader, etc.
Research ActivitiesPresently a number of research projects are carried out by the faculty members of this department. The research fields include clinical hepatology, oxidative stress, role of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants in health and disease. Also, some of this work has been published in journals of international repute.
