The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology offers a 3-year postgraduate program in Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha University. The program inculcates in the student, versatility in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. This department trains the students in diagnostic histopathology, cytology, Immunohistochemistry, hard tissue microtomy, frozen section rapid diagnosis and recent trends viz PCR. The department has separate undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum with independent chambers for clinical examination, cytology and hematology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Immunohistochemistry, and a research cell equipped with state of the art facilities.  The Department renders its services in diagnosing head and neck pathologies not only for the home institution, but also for others institutions in Chennai and south India.  The complete panel of Immunohistochemistry available targets a precise diagnosis and accurate immunophenotyping.

The Immunohistochemistry and hard tissue microtomy facilities available cater to the research minded undergraduates and postgraduate students from all over the country. Other institutions also procure teaching slides from our Department as our Department houses a wide array of Pathology specimens ranging from developmental lesions to rare Neoplasms. The Department provides the perfect platform for a student to enrich themselves with basic knowledge available through the various infrastructure and experienced teaching faculty. The atmosphere is student friendly and at the same time is motivating to strive hard to become a competent Oral Pathologist. The students are encouraged to publish their academic work and interesting cases of the Department in International journals thus making our department a known entity in the International academic arena. The current research focus of the department is to emphasize on Saliva as a diagnostic tool and Dermatoglyphics.

The Department is well equipped with a centrally air conditioned clinical examination area and laboratory facilities ranging from routine Diagnostic Histopathology to state of art advanced molecular and immunohistochemical techniques. This Department ranks to be one of the few dental departments in the country which has fully equipped Immunohistochemistry panel, hard tissue microtome and molecular Diagnostic aids.

The Histopathology Department is full fledged and effectively caters to patients needs not only within the institution but also to cases from all over the country. The ample research facilities available aid the department to render its services to research scholars from various facets of dentistry.Apart from routine Histopathology, special services in the form of Immunohistochemistry, hard tissue microtomy and frozen section are an additional unique feature of this department differentiating it from most of the other Oral Pathology Departments in the Country
